Master of Arts in Financial Management
The Master of Arts in Financial Management offers a unique professional training in the art of financial management as applied to the broad as well as specific aspects of profit as well as nonprofit organizations. The curriculum covers managerial functions applicable to a wide variety of situations and institutions, and emphasis is placed on the tools needed by a manager to fulfill his or her job. The M.A. in financial management is designed not only for full-time students but also for candidates who, while already performing managerial functions in their regular work, are seeking an opportunity to increase their knowledge and skill in management, in particular financial management, and who wish to be part-time students. Degree candidates must earn a minimum of thirty-six semester hours of graduate credit.
A. Undergraduate Requirements
A minimum of eighteen undergraduate credits in the areas of accounting, economics, statistics and business, and/or management-related courses.
B. Course Work
1. Required Courses (30): Mgt 630, Financial Management (3); Mgt 631, Financial Policies and Strategies (3); Mgt 593, Portfolio Management and Investment Analysis (3); Mgt 670, Seminar in Financial Management (3); Acct 505, Introductory Managerial Accounting (3); Mgt 565, Quantitative Methods in Decision Making (3); Mgt 610, Organization Theory and Behavior (3); Mgt 629, Strategic Planning and Control of Organizations (3); Econ 535, Ethics in Economics and Business (3); Econ 662, Graduate Statistics (3).
2. Electives: Any two of the following: Mgt 538, Derivative Securities and Risk Management (3); Mgt 542, Financial Markets and Institutions (3); Mgt 589, International Corporate Finance (3); Mgt 584, International Banking and Financial Markets (3); other departmental courses with approval of the adviser.
C. Certification of Proficiency in Computer Science
This certification should be completed during the first year of course work. It is obtained by the successful completion of a computer science course or an equivalent course which has been approved by the department (Mgt 568, Microcomputer Applications in Business, is highly recommended) or by the equivalent practical work with computers which is so evaluated by the department. The course in computer science or the equivalent course is not a part of the thirty-six minimum credit hours necessary for the M.A. in Financial Management.
D. Comprehensive Examination
All students must pass a comprehensive examination in the major required courses. Students must complete all required courses (see B-1) except Mgt 670 (Seminar in Financial Management), before the semester in which they will take the comprehensive examination.
